This article shares the story of two urban hikers who evolved from city strolls to adventurous day camps in the wilderness. It covers their journey, the challenges they faced, and the joy they found in transforming their hikes into immersive outdoor experiences. It also provides insights for others looking to enhance their hiking adventures.
When Lisa and I first started hiking together seven years ago, it was nothing more than a casual stroll through the city's inner trails. Armed with nothing but our running shoes and water bottles, we explored the urban landscape, finding joy in the simplicity of our adventures. Little did we know that these inner-city hikes would spark a passion that would take us far beyond the city limits.
As time went on, our hikes grew longer and more challenging. We ventured into the Provincial Parks surrounding Vancouver, British Columbia, seeking out the natural beauty that lay beyond the city's borders. These new trails, with their breathtaking views and tranquil settings, demanded more preparation. We started packing sandwiches, granola bars, and extra water, eager to enjoy a well-earned snack at the end of each hike.
Our enthusiasm for hiking soon led us to incorporate elements of day camping into our adventures. We began bringing compact BBQs, dual stoves, cooking utensils, cookware sets, folding chairs, and even a small portable power station. Depending on the trail, we would either hike in with these items to set up a temporary day camp near a scenic lake or waterfall or complete the loop trail and set up our camp back at the truck.
Day camping added a new dimension to our outdoor adventures. We would cook meals, make tea, hang LED string lights, and even engage in artistic activities. Lisa, ever the artist, would sharpen her pencil crayons with an electric sharpener and draw the beautiful landscapes around us. These moments allowed us to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and recharge in the embrace of nature.
Through this journey, we discovered the profound impact that nature could have on our well-being. Hiking and day camping became our sanctuary, a place where we could reconnect with ourselves and each other. Inspired by this, we decided to turn our passion into a business, hoping to share the joy of day hiking and day camping with others.
But this story isn't just about us. It's about how anyone can transform their hiking experience into something more enriching and fulfilling. Whether you're an urban dweller looking to escape the city or a seasoned hiker seeking new adventures, the blend of hiking and day camping can provide a perfect balance of activity and relaxation.
Imagine starting your day with a brisk hike through a dense forest trail, the sound of birds chirping and leaves rustling underfoot. As you reach the pinnacle of your hike, a stunning lake comes into view, its crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding mountains. This is where you set up your day camp. Out comes the compact BBQ, the folding chairs, and the cooking gear. While the BBQ heats up, you unpack the fresh ingredients you've brought along, ready to prepare a hearty meal.
After a satisfying lunch, you settle into your chair, perhaps with a book or a sketchpad. The tranquility of the setting encourages creativity and mindfulness. As the afternoon sun casts a golden glow over the landscape, you brew a pot of tea, savoring the moment of peace.
This experience is accessible to anyone with a love for nature and a bit of planning. Start with local trails and gradually expand to more remote areas as you gain confidence and experience. Invest in portable camping gear that fits your needs and can be easily transported. Always prioritize safety by being aware of your surroundings, packing a first aid kit, and informing someone of your plans.
Our journey from urban hikes to day camps in the wilderness has been transformative, and we believe it can be for you too. Whether you’re looking to escape the city's hustle or find a new way to enjoy the great outdoors, combining hiking with day camping offers endless possibilities for adventure and relaxation.
All the best,
Johny & Lisa
